Ambi’s A-Fo, Trial by Fire
Ambi’s A-Fo, Trial by Fire
Chanel Van Waeyenberge, L’Express de Madagascar, 30 January 2014.
On the occasion of the exhibition “A-Fo” at Is’art galerie, the article traces the encounter with fire of Ambinintsoa Andrianjakarivelo, known as Ambi. A creative, warming and purifying element, it marks each of her works, including the piece “Scissiparité,” made of burnt, cut fabric. The article follows her path from Madagascar to her fine arts studies in France. It also recounts the difficult period she went through in 2007, when she had to leave French territory despite her situation being in order: an ordeal she recounts in the painting “Indignez-vous.”
Fire is an element that’s hard to control, which leaves a sense of mystery about the final result. You never know what the finished piece will look like.
