Ambi and Malagasy Papers

An interview on the occasion of Ambi’s exhibition at Galerie Bercker (rue Matheron, until 29 June), part of the Paper’Art Project run by the Gudgi network of Aix galleries. Ambi presents twenty paintings made on handcrafted Antemoro paper from Madagascar. She explains her process: the paper is “attacked” with metal points heated on embers, the subject of her thesis on the place of fire in contemporary art. The interview also traces her path: her childhood in Madagascar, her choice of fine arts in France “without knowing anything about it, just because the word art was in it,” and the years of administrative uncertainty she went through after 2007, resolved in 2010 when her residency application was accepted.

The trace of the burn stands for the scars of a life.
